Cairo..Egyptian-American discussions regarding stopping the war in Sudan

Cairo – Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister Hossam Issa discussed with American officials ceasefire efforts in Sudan, and the possibility of opening humanitarian corridors to deliver humanitarian aid to those affected.

This came during Issa’s meeting yesterday with the American envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, and Washington’s ambassador to his country, Hero Mustafa, in Cairo, according to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, published on Wednesday through its Facebook account.

The ministry said that the meeting discussed “the efforts made to reach a ceasefire in Sudan, and to return to the negotiating table, in order to spare the blood of the brotherly Sudanese people, and to preserve the security and safety of civilians.”

He also discussed the possibility of opening humanitarian corridors to facilitate the arrival of food and medical supplies to the Sudanese, while highlighting the pivotal role of Egypt and neighboring countries in this field.

According to the statement, the two sides reviewed “the ongoing preparations to hold the international humanitarian conference to support Sudan and neighboring countries, which will be hosted by Paris on April 15, and is expected to witness broad participation from countries sponsoring peace efforts in Sudan, donors, and international organizations.”

It was agreed during the meeting to continue consultation and coordination during the next stage, and to provide all means of support, in a way that contributes to Sudan overcoming the delicate and critical stage it is going through, according to the same source.

Since April 15, 2023, a war has been continuing in Sudan between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces led by Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo “Hemedti,” leaving regarding 13,900 people dead and more than 8 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.

Calls for calm during the month of Ramadan did not succeed in the African country, as clashes renewed between the two sides of the fighting in several areas, especially Khartoum, which resulted in a widespread wave of displacement.
