Cairo affirms its full solidarity with Beirut and rejects any threats aimed at destabilizing Lebanon

Badr Abdel-Ati’s statement came during two phone calls he made with the caretaker Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, and his Foreign Minister, Abdullah Bou Habib.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid stated that Minister Abdel Aati expressed during the two calls Egypt’s full solidarity with the State of Lebanon and its rejection of any threats aimed at destabilizing Lebanon or the safety of its people, and its deep concern over the ongoing escalation between Lebanese factions and Israel and its potential impact on Lebanon’s security and stability.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs briefed the Lebanese officials on the contacts that Egypt is conducting with the various parties with the aim of containing the ongoing escalation and preventing the region from drifting into a large-scale war that threatens the stability of its countries and the security of its peoples, and stressing the necessity of supporting the Lebanese state and preserving the interests of the Lebanese people in the face of the threats surrounding them.

The spokesman added that the Lebanese officials expressed, during the two calls, their great appreciation for the support and solidarity of Egypt, its leadership and people, with Lebanon in these critical circumstances, and their confidence that the Egyptian moves aim to protect the interests of the Lebanese people and the stability of their country.

It was agreed to continue consultations during the next phase with the aim of coordinating efforts to contain tension and escalation.

The town of Majdal Shams in the occupied Golan Heights buried the bodies of 12 children who were killed on Saturday when a rocket fell on a football field.

While Israel accused the Lebanese factions of being responsible for the incident and vowed to respond, the Lebanese factions confirmed that they had nothing to do with the bombing that targeted Majdal Shams in the occupied Golan Heights and denied responsibility for the incident.

Following the incident, Tel Aviv vowed a harsh response to the attack, while several ministers in Netanyahu’s government called for an attack on Lebanese factions and Lebanon.

For its part, the Lebanese government called for an “immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts.”

The developments come in the context of ongoing battles between Lebanese factions on the one hand and the Israeli army on the other for more than 9 months.
