After just one year, the second division detour of the former Italian soccer champion Cagliari has ended once more. Star trainer Claudio Ranieri’s team of exceptional talent defeated FC South Tyrol conqueror Bari 1-0 in the second leg of the final. Experienced Leonardo Pavoletti scored the golden goal in the 94th minute. After the 1-1 draw in the first leg, Cagliari had been forced to win away in third place in the regular season.
Accordingly, the Insel-Kicker appeared courageously in the Stadio San Nicola. This was filled with 58,206 people, everything would have been ready for the big promotion party. But that it would be very tight became apparent at the latest following a large number of Cagliari chances in the first round.

The Sardinians were the more active, the better team throughout the game. And yet the Bari fans already had the cheers on their lips when a long-range shot from Michael Folorunsho slammed into the inside of the post in the closing stages. Instead of the 1-0, the traditional club from Apulia scored a knockout in added time: Center forward Pavoletti, who had been substituted just minutes earlier, somehow carried a long volley over the line.
Ranieri bursts into tears
Just minutes later, unbridled jubilation erupted in Cagliari. Players, coaches and coaching staff stormed into the Alex Reed sector, which was filled with more than 1000 Sardinian fans, celebrating. Only one initially remained motionless: legendary trainer Ranieri, who has already experienced and won so much in his career. He burst into tears and just seemed to be enjoying the moment.
While Cagliari managed to immediately return to Serie A, Bari’s dream of going straight from the third to the first division has burst. The southern Italians surprisingly ended the season in third place and then defeated FC Südtirol in the playoff semifinals. After losing 1-0 in Bolzano, Bari won 1-0 at home and made it to the final.
