Coffee is well known for helping to wake up or to give a little boost. It’s not the only drink capable of doing this, this is what Mac Lesggy explained on RTL: “If coffee contains caffeine, so does tea. A cup of tea sometimes even contains more caffeine than a cup of coffee.” Tea acts as much on the nervous system as coffee since theine and caffeine come from the same molecule: an alkaloid.

Caffeine comes from a molecule (alkaloid) which is a psychoactive compound. If caffeine wakes us up, it is because it is located in a strategic location in the brain. It will replace adenosine – a molecule which aims to put us to sleep – by attaching to our chemical receptors located at the ends of our nerve cells. Caffeine therefore produces the opposite effect by waking us up, it is not just a simple impression. Obviously, the effects of caffeine depend on the amount in our cup of tea or coffee. Mac Lesggy explains that there is very little difference between a cup of tea and coffee: “Espresso is more concentrated, but we drink less of it than tea. And then, the longer you let the tea steep, the more the amount of caffeine dissolved in the water increases.”

Despite the small difference in caffeine levels between the two drinks, the effect is not the same. Tea contains other chemical compounds that act on the nervous system such as polyphenol molecules – also linked to caffeine. This combination is less soluble than caffeine alone and will take longer to diffuse in the body. Coffee acts in a completely opposite way since the caffeine is free and will diffuse instantly, reaching the brain very quickly. You can therefore choose which drink to consume depending on the properties you are looking for. For a prolonged and gentle action, you need tea. On the other hand, if you need an immediate boost, turn to coffee.
