Café Restaurant De Ysbreeker on Weesperzijde in the east of Amsterdam is a place steeped in history and full of charm. We had been curious regarding this location for a long time because De Ysbreeker is not easy to pigeonhole. It is a place where you can drink coffee, have lunch, have drinks, lounge, play games and dine. A vibrant place in Amsterdam.
A space with multiple destinations
On the inside, Café Restaurant De Ysbreeker is larger than it seems at first glance. The enormous space is divided into smaller parts. Upon entering you will come across a large table where you can quietly read a newspaper or just have a nice drink. Further on in the restaurant there are tables for dining and a bar in the middle as an eye-catcher of the room. At the back of the room there is a kind of coffee bar or café, where you can even play a game of billiards. All these different corners are comfortably furnished and radiate a warm atmosphere. The stained glass windows and columns give the building a historic touch.

A menu for every occasion
De Ysbreeker surprises with a varied menu. You can come here for breakfast, lunch, a nice drink or dinner. The cuisine is known for its refined dishes using local ingredients. A combination of classic French cuisine and a modern twist. De Ysbreeker consciously chooses suppliers who consider sustainability very important. For example, they make the dishes with seasonal vegetables and the fish species have the MSC/ASC quality mark, which stands for sustainable fishing. We also cook with honest, responsible and fresh products.

Ginger spritz
Our experience
Our evening started with a refreshing ginger spritz and a tasty Fever Tree Elderflower Tonic and a twist of lemon. As a starter we chose the gravad lax with pomegranate, celeriac and a fresh fennel salad. A nice light starter. The beetroot hummus, lightly smoked and served with roasted beets and airy pita bread, was also a good starter. Special credits for the pita, which is not dry and nice and airy.

Cauliflower steak and ray wing fillet
As a main course we shared the fish of the day and a cauliflower steak. The fish, a fried ray wing fillet with roasted pointed cabbage, yellow curry, mashed potatoes, lobster gravy with sesame oil and Dutch shrimps, was a good choice. The cauliflower steak with black lentils, lemon capers, harissa hummus, chimichurri and pine nuts was also a delicious dish. And we thought the two might be combined well.

Sticky toffee ginger cake and chocolate truffles
To finish we chose the sticky toffee ginger cake with vanilla ice cream. We were curious whether the ginger would be too overpowering, but that was certainly not the case. The cake and the scoop of ice cream are super tasty in combination with the sticky toffee sauce. Finally, of course, we mightn’t turn down the chocolate truffles from patisserie Holtkamp. All in all we had a very pleasant and successful evening at Café Restaurant De Ysbreeker.
