Rising costs are leaving a mark on small businesses across the board, and the restaurant industry is feeling the pressure acutely.Minimum wage hikes, coupled with surging prices for essential ingredients, are forcing business owners to make tough decisions.

Rory McHugh, owner of the popular McHugh’s cafe, doesn’t mince words about the situation. “It’s a killer,” he says, referring to the recent minimum wage increase, the second in as many years.

In just 12 years, the minimum wage has nearly doubled, climbing from €7.20 to €13.50. McHugh points out that this rapid increase can’t be passed directly onto consumers. “You can’t have a situation where you have to put it on the customer or you will lose customers,” he explains, emphasizing the delicate balance his business must strive for.

McHugh is committed to keeping his sandwich prices below €10, but the challenge is real. He’s witnessed an astounding seven coffee price increases in 2024 alone, on top of rising meat costs.To manage these mounting expenses, his cafe has been forced to shorten its operating hours, closing earlier in some locations. “I don’t wont to do that,” mchugh admits. “It’s bad for the customer who wants to come after four o’clock for a coffee or something nice, but it’s our only way of controlling costs.”

McHugh’s concerns reflect a larger trend in the industry. A report from the Restaurant Association of Ireland reveals a stark reality: 600 restaurants closed in the year leading up to October.

Despite the challenges, McHugh sees a glimmer of hope.The recent arrival of a new competitor, the Tribe chain, has opened a few doors down. “They do different products to us, we focus on sandwiches. It’s great for the town,” he says, acknowledging that competition can ultimately benefit the community.

A balancing Act: McHugh’s Café Navigates Rising Costs

Rory McHugh, owner of McHugh’s Café, is facing a familiar challenge for many small business owners – the rising cost of doing business. “Honestly, it’s been a real challenge,” he admits, reflecting on recent minimum wage increases. “While we understand the need to support workers, it puts a huge strain on our operations.”

The café, known for its tasty sandwiches priced under €10, has been forced to make tough decisions to stay afloat. “It’s a balancing act,” Rory explains.”We’ve had to absorb several increases in our coffee bean prices alone this year, on top of rising meat costs.” Shortening operating hours in some locations,while regrettable,has become a necessary measure to control costs. “It’s a tough decision, but it’s one of the only ways we can keep our doors open,” he says.

The situation isn’t unique to McHugh’s. The Restaurant Association of Ireland has reported a concerning number of restaurant closures, highlighting the widespread impact of these inflationary pressures. “We’re seeing it across the industry,” Rory observes, his voice laced with concern. “With these rising costs, many restaurants are struggling to stay afloat. the impact on jobs and local economies is notable.”

Despite the gloomy outlook, Rory remains optimistic. “There are glimmers of hope,” he notes. He points to a growing movement of local farms prioritizing sustainability and a renewed focus on supporting local businesses. A recent arrival,the Tribe restaurant chain,adds another layer of optimism. “It’s great for the town to have competition,” he says, “and it encourages everyone to raise their game.”

Looking ahead, Rory believes a collaborative approach is essential to navigate these challenges. “It requires a collaborative effort from policymakers, businesses, and consumers to find solutions that support both workers and small businesses in these tough times,” he emphasizes. “That’s what keeps me optimistic – we’re not alone in this fight.”
