The restaurant on Gersthofer Straße is in soft opening and will officially open in March.
One or two passers-by have already noticed: something is happening at Gersthofer Straße 30. A new restaurant has moved in where the Israeli restaurant Rubi was until recently located. And a well-known one: a branch of Café Francais is currently starting up here on Währinger Straße.
We are currently still in a gentle soft opening, for the time being there is a small menu with little things. “We’re starting small to try things out and get used to it,” says Café Francais operator René Steindachner to the “Presse”. “We’re kind of in the development phase, we don’t even have a sign yet.”
Reopening despite bankruptcy
The expansion seems surprising given that the parent company on Währinger Strasse only filed for bankruptcy last year. For Steindachner, who also runs the Italian restaurant Francesco in Vienna-Grinzing, this is not a contradiction, quite the opposite. They are on course for restructuring.
The official opening of the new Café Francais location is planned for the beginning of March, when the restaurant’s garden will also be used and the menu will be enlarged: The aim is to offer something similar to that in Café Francais on Währinger Straße. “The corner is very nice with the guest garden, it’s a very nice restaurant,” says Steindachner.
