The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has just ruled on the controversial red card received by Cédric Bakambu during the match between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mauritania during the CAN 2024 qualifiers. In all the clubs where he went, Cédric Bakambu scored a good number of goals. Whether during his seasons with Villareal, Beijing Guoan or currently with Olympiakos, the Congolese international (42 caps, 15 goals) always ends the season with around ten goals. Only his time at OM is an exception. With the Democratic Republic of Congo, the attacker is also present. Even if he had decided to take a step back in April 2022, Bakambu made his return to the national team last March during the double confrontation once morest Mauritania (3-1), during the CAN 2023 qualifiers. For his first match under Frenchman Sébastien Desabre, the 32-year-old found the net on the first leg before scoring once more but also taking a controversial red card on the return (1-1) following a simulation of the Mauritanian goalkeeper. FECOFA had appealed the decision. CAF has just ruled on the case of Bakambu.

According to Jenovic Mbowa, radio journalist Top Congo FMthe CAF Referees Committee has ruled that the referee’s decisions are final” and decided to maintain the red card of Bakambu. A decision which should not please the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) and which may seem very surprising as the red card received by the Congolese international seems unjustified. Especially since the Tunisian referee, Sadok Selmi, had been dismissed upcoming CAF Champions League and CAF Cup matches due to his performance that day.

An expulsion that Bakambu still does not understand, who is also surprised at the behavior of the referee in an interview with Leopardsfoot : “There were no arguments… Strangely, when I took the red card, the referee no longer spoke French. He looks at the Mauritanian public and did not want to talk to me. Reason why I started freaking out…”. The Democratic Republic of Congo will therefore have to do without him once morest Gabon in June during the next day of the playoffs. The Congolese are last in their group, two points behind Sudan, second and three points behind the Gabonese leader.
