After filing a lawsuit against Apple last November, the General Superintendence of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (SG/Cade) opened, this Monday (3), an administrative process to investigate whether Google has adopted anti-competitive practices related to the Play Store on Android.
The new research is focused on recognizing the “imposition of high fees and strict rules on developers, and impediments to the operation of competing app stores on Android”, and runs under number 08700.002969/2024-61.
The body must assess whether Google forces its payment system, harming the offer of alternatives, and analyze the pre-installation and visibility of the Play Store on devices with the operating system. When consulted by a media outlet, the company stated that it will not comment on the new investigation.

## Google Facing Antitrust Scrutiny in Brazil: A Closer Look
**Host:** Welcome back to the show. Today, we’re discussing the latest news in the ongoing battle between tech giants and regulators. Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) has launched a new investigation into Google’s practices surrounding its Play Store. Joining us to unpack this development is tech analyst, Sarah Johnson. Sarah, thanks for being here.
**Sarah:** Thanks for having me.
**Host:** So, Sarah, can you give us a rundown of what exactly CADE is investigating?
**Sarah:** CADE is looking into whether Google is engaging in anticompetitive practices with its Play Store on Android devices. They’re specifically concerned about high fees charged to developers, strict rules imposed on them, and potential barriers preventing other app stores from competing with Google Play.
**Host:** This all sounds very familiar. We’ve seen similar investigations and lawsuits targeting Google and Apple in other parts of the world. what makes this case in Brazil unique?
**Sarah:** While the core issues are similar, this case highlights the growing global scrutiny of these tech giants. With Brazil being a major market for Google, the outcome of this investigation could have significant ramifications for both the company’s operations in the region and its global strategy.
**Host:** Definitely a case to watch. Sarah, do you think CADE has a strong case against Google?
**Sarah:** It’s too early to say definitively. CADE will need to present strong evidence to support their claims. Google, of course, maintains it operates fairly and will likely mount a robust defence. This case could ultimately be decided in the courts.
