The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management has put seventeen projects on Dutch roads on hold, partly because of the nitrogen problem.
This concerns, for example, work on the traffic junctions Rottepolderplein and Hoevelaken, the widening of the A58 between Breda and Tilburg and the A27 between Zeewolde and Eemnes and work on the Vaarweg IJsselmeer-Meppel. There are fourteen roads and three waterways in total.
The fact that the projects are temporarily halted is due to the nitrogen problem, rising prices in construction and a shortage of personnel. “With the money released, we can catch up with major maintenance,” said Minister Mark Harbers (Infrastructure) on Friday after the cabinet meeting. By major maintenance, the minister means, among other things, the replacement or refurbishment of bridges.
It was already known that the cabinet wanted to put some of the work on hold. In recent weeks, there have been discussions about which projects will be put on hold.
By pausing the seventeen projects, a total of 4 billion euros will be released. The government will continue with maintenance of the existing infrastructure. In addition, projects to make N-roads safer are excluded. Projects will also continue that will enable the accessibility of 400,000 homes that will be built up to and including 2030.
