Bye-bye, Calibri: Microsoft introduces Aptos as the new default font

Rollout in the next few months

Microsoft already updated its Office web apps to make Aptos the default font. Over the coming months, the new font will gradually become the default across all Microsoft 365 apps and services for all users.

Calibri is still preserved. Microsoft also plans to add other earlier standard fonts, such as Times New Roman, to the top of the font list for easy access.

Originally, the typeface was codenamed Bierstadt during development. But it was then christened Aptos after the Californian city where the designer Matteson liked to vacation.

Microsoft is positioning Aptos as a component of a visual overhaul of Microsoft 365 applications. Other changes include new colors, backgrounds, and a new font selection interface.
