Leading EV maker BYD caused a stir in the industry with the unveiling of its new Seagull EV. With starting prices as low as $9,700 (69,800 yuan), the new EV, nicknamed the “Lamborghini mini,” is not available in the US but has caught the attention of American automakers. BYD’s Seagull EV is powered by Blade batteries and comes in two versions: one with a range of up to 190 miles (305 km) and another with a range of up to 252 miles (405 km). The car also features a 10.1″ rotating center screen and a minimalist design.
One of the most surprising aspects of this new EV is that BYD reportedly earns a profit on each unit sold, which has left American automakers concerned. Terry Woychowski, former GM executive and current president of automotive at Caresoft Global, called BYD’s Seagull EV a “clarion call for the rest of the industry.” American automakers are now looking to develop more affordable EVs to compete with BYD’s low-cost offering.
