BYD’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has been registered in Indonesia. Is BYD interested in selling PHEV cars in Indonesia?
BYD doesn’t seem to only want to play in the purely battery-based electric car segment. Globally, BYD has plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology called DM-i technology.
It seems that the DM-i hybrid technology will enter Indonesia. As proof, BYD registered the design of a car with DM-i technology. The design patent is registered in the Official Industrial Design Gazette document No. 56/DI/2024 released by the Directorate of Copyright and Industrial Design, Directorate General of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

In the document, BYD COMPANY LIMITED registered the design of an SUV which is thought to have PHEV or DM-i technology. The registered design is identical to the BYD Song L DM-i PHEV car which was recently launched in China.
Head of PR & Government Relations PT BYD Motor Indonesia Luther Panjaitan said that basically BYD fully supports all types of energy transition initiatives determined by the government. Including battery-based pure electric cars or PHEVs.
“Indeed, when referring to the global determination of NEVs (new energy vehicles), this also includes PHEVs. And also the experience in several countries that PHEVs and EVs both play a high role in the energy transition, especially in areas with geographic & demographic conditions certain things,” said Luther to detikOto, Monday (14/10/2024).
Luther emphasized that BYD is a key player in the NEV industry. According to him, in terms of product line, BYD’s PHEV or DM-i technology cars could enter Indonesia.
“However, favorable policies are still needed that support competitiveness, especially if they are expected to be able to match the pricing level of ICE cars (conventional engine cars) in order to accelerate the transition,” he said.
