The Chinese electric car manufacturer brought thousands of vehicles to Bremerhaven in February to conquer the German market.

But according to a media report, sales in the country of Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz are stopping. Only a three-digit number of BYD cars were newly registered in March.

“Handelsblatt” also reports a mold problem in the cars that were delivered. BYD denies this.

They were images with symbolic power: In February last year, “BYD Explorer No. 1”. The Chinese’s own cargo ship electric car manufacturer BYD brought 3,000 vehicles to Germany. This seemed to be the start of Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz taking the country by storm. But according to a media report, BYD’s latest figures in this country are sobering.

In March, no more than 160 new vehicles from the new car giant were registered in Germany. This is reported by “Handelsblatt“, referring to data from the industry service Dataforce. This continues the trend from previous months.

In the first quarter of this year, BYD had only 393 car registrations in the Federal Republic. If you extrapolate this figure to the whole year, the manufacturer will be well below the 4,141 cars from the previous year.

The situation in other countries looks better. In France, BYD might almost double the number of registrations from 2023 to almost 1,000 in the first three months of the year. But so far Germany has been by far the most important sales market in Europe for the group. And BYD actually wants to more than double its sales abroad this year. BYD was only able to win recently thanks to its strength in the Chinese domestic market Tesla might soon replace us as the world’s largest producer of electric cars.

According to “Handelsblatt”, the weakened demand in Germany is now also evident in Bremerhaven, one of the largest transshipment points for new cars in the world. A spokesman for the logistics service provider BLG confirmed to the newspaper that BYD’s cars were “currently longer” at the car terminal there. This also affects other manufacturers and “has to do with market demand”.

Unsightly: According to the report, there is also a mold problem with the electric cars that are delivered. This happens from time to time during longer overseas transport and says little regarding the quality of a vehicle, according to “Handelsblatt”.

However, it is said that so many cars at BYD are affected that deliveries suffered. There is talk of longer waiting times for a three-digit number of German customers. BYD confirmed to the newspaper that they had “widespread” problems with mold last year. But the vehicles in Bremerhaven are not affected, according to the car manufacturer.
