This was no longer in doubt since Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was seen at BYD HQ. All that was missing was the official announcement, which is now done: the Chinese brand will indeed build its cars in Hungary for Europe. BYD will thus be the first Chinese manufacturer to have a real industrial tool on our continent.
The company therefore preferred the path of a brand new factory to that of the purchase of the Ford factory in Saarlouis, for which discussions had been undertaken for a while. For the moment, we do not know which models will be produced on site, nor when the first units will leave the lines. “The factory will be built in several phases and is expected to create thousands of local jobs, stimulate the local economy and support local supply chains,” the press release states laconically.
