Mississippi executes ex-soldiers

It is the first execution in Mississippi this year and the second since 2013: A former soldier sentenced to death dies in a detention center following being injected with lethal injection.

In the US state of Mississippi, the death penalty has been carried out for the first time in a year. Authorities said the ex-soldier, who was sentenced to death, was executed by lethal injection at Parchman Detention Center. The 58-year-old was found guilty in 2001 of kidnapping, raping and murdering a 16-year-old girl. He had confessed to the deeds.

It was Mississippi’s first execution this year and the second since 2013. The conservative-governed state has struggled for several years to obtain the drugs used for executions. Many manufacturers refuse to sell their products to US states that enforce the death penalty.

According to US reports, Loden “showed remorse to the victim’s family” before the execution. A total of 18 people have been executed in the United States so far this year.
