By-election Results in Kerala: LDF and UDF Fronts Show Strong Performance in 17 Local Body Wards

Thiruvananthapuram: In the by-elections to 17 local body wards in nine districts of the state, the LDF and UDF fronts are strong. UDF won in nine seats and LDF in seven seats. BJP also managed to win one seat. The LDF captured three seats from the UDF. The UDF captured two of the LDF’s sitting seats and one seat won in an independent contest.

Earlier, UDF had nine seats and LDF seven. An independent had won one seat. BJP has won one seat this time. BJP has captured a ward from CPM.

Counting is in progress. Voting was held for 15 gram panchayat wards and two block panchayat wards on Thursday.

Kollam:

LDF captures Ottakal Ward of Thenmala Gram Panchayat. This was the sitting seat of UDF. Elections were held here following the death of Congress ward member Chandrika Sebastian. CPM candidate Anupama defeated Bijili James of Congress by 34 votes. This was the sitting seat of LDF. BJP candidate AS Ranjith defeated CPM’s Anil by 100 votes. The by-election was held following the death of LDF member Ratheesh Kumar. Last time, Ratheesh won by a majority of two votes once morest the BJP.

Alappuzha:

LDF has captured the UDF sitting seat in Kotampanadi ward of Thalavadi Gram Panchayat. CPM’s NP Rajan defeated Congress aspirant by 197 votes.

Kottayam:

LDF retained Maravan Thurut division of Vaikom block panchayat. CPM candidate Reshma Praveen won by 232 votes. LDF had a majority of over a thousand votes last time.

Ernakulam:

The UDF has captured the Vadakupuram ward of the Ezhikara Gram Panchayat.-This was the sitting seat of the LDF. Congress candidate T. P. Soman defeated CPM’s Adv. Navaneeth by 62 votes. Muravan Thurut ward of Vadakekara Gram Panchayat was retained by UDF. Nikhitha Jobi of Congress won by 228 votes. UDF won in Kokunn Ward of Mookannur Gram Panchayat. Last time, Reshma Varghese, who contested as an independent, won here. This time Congress’s Sini Mathachan defeated the left independent Sisimol Rijo by 268 votes. This was the LDF sitting seat. Congress’ Deepti Praiju defeated CPM’s Reshma by 72 votes.

Thrissur:

The LDF retained Thanikudam ward in Madakathara gram panchayat. CPI’s Mithun won by 174 votes. BJP is at the second position here. Congress came third.

Palakkad:

Thanikun ward of Pookotkav gram panchayat was captured by LDF. This was a UDF sitting seat. P. Manoj, who was a member of UDF, resigned and contested for LDF and won by 303 votes.

Malappuram:

UDF is leading in Perinthalmanna block panchayat’s Chemmanyod ward. This is the UDF sitting seat. UDF has retained Kalakunn ward of Chunkathara Gram Panchayat. UDF Independent KP Maimuna defeated Left Independent Razina Najeem by 109 votes in the crucial election. The by-election was held in Kalakunn Ward as Najmunnissa was disqualified by the Election Commission under the Prohibition of Defection Act. Najmunneesa jumped from UDF to Marukandam and came to LDF and was the panchayat president. UDF retained Akkarapuram ward of Tuvvur gram panchayat. Muslim League’s Ayyappan defeated CPM’s Sudhin KV by 440 votes. UDF retained Kattilassery ward of Puzhakattiri gram panchayat. Congress’s Aziz Chakkachan defeated CPM’s Abdus Samad by just six votes.

Kozhikode:

The UDF has retained Palodikun Ward in Velam Gram Panchayat. League’s EP Saleem won by 42 votes.

Kannur:

The LDF has retained Thatiyod ward in Munderi Gram Panchayat. CPM’s Reeshma won by 393 votes. Parikadav ward of Dharmadam gram panchayat was retained by LDF. CPM candidate B. Geetamma won by just nine votes. Suresh of Congress is second.
