Is AI regarding to replace sports coaching? Probably not, but it must be admitted that some master it well enough to obtain serious results.
This is the case of Greg Mushen who told a few months ago how he had used chat GPT to start running. The result: -12 kg and an addiction on the way!
Today, a new success story that comes to us from Chris Smitha technophile and journalist for an American tech webzine.
The latter is not at his first attempt since he had already entrusted the famous chatbot with the task of finding him the ideal running shoes, keen to improve comfort and reduce their risk of injury.
Chris’ prompt to get help choosing his pair of running shoes…
Chris however points out that ChatGPT can provide aberrant answers, so he always asks the AI for references and information (such as the lowest price, a link to a store, a comment on YouTube and a link to photos of the product).
He also reminds that ChatGPT knowledge is limited at the end of 2021.
(Parenthesis: he spent time developing his script and then watching test videos of the models indicated by ChatGPT, he would have done better to go to a stride specialist and above all, to try!).
Not unhappy with the result, he counted on the help of AI to achieve:
gradually increase your running distance, improve your personal best, but above all, set off to conquer a half-marathon.
A bit of context
Unlike the aforementioned Greg Mushen, Chris isn’t exactly a “newbie” when it comes to sports or running.
Before coming to ChatGPT, he regularly ran 5Ks and did fitness and weight training exercises.
He also had experience running a half marathon, having run one in April 2017 (without any training).
For him, “it’s not complicated and it’s something that’s more mental than physical” (obviously, when you’re not training…).
After having (quite logically) suffered during this race, he decided to never run once more without having trained properly beforehand.
A sprain followed, then a global pandemic, and here we are in 2023, the year Chris decided to embark on a new semi.
Here is the prompt entered by Chris in ChatGPT:
Hey I need a training plan for a man to run 21km [x] ans, [x] cm, and weighs approximately [x] kilogram. [x] kilogram. it has [x] days to train. he currently runs at an average speed of [x] min/km and would like to improve it. the person will also do strength training regarding three times a week. we will also prepare a 7-day feeding program for him, as varied and nutritious as possible for the main objective.
It’s up to you to adjust this prompt to include as much information as possible so that ChatGPT can tailor the plan to your needs.
Here, we are in the case of someone who was already running 5 km comfortably and who had a muscle strengthening program.
Nothing stops you to use ChatGPT to start running from scratchand the chatbot will customize your set of rules.
Following which, the artificial intelligence provided him with 23 weeks of training to achieve his goals:
The robot’s first answer was too “informational”, so Chris asked him to be more specific…
Since the first answer wasn’t actionable, Chris asked for something more specific than precise stats, and here’s what the beast gave him:
Note that later in his training, Chris asked for a more detailed interval training plan.
Results…
Our man then scrupulously followed his program for regarding two months, although he sometimes skipped training to give his body a rest.
As he felt the pace was too high, he asked ChatGPT to adapt to improve the rest periods.
Results: Chris has ran regarding 120 km in June 2023 and walked 68 km more. In July, he ran 140 km and walked 86 km!
His speed over 5 km has improved considerably compared to what it was before he started using ChatGPT in his training.
Concretely, our protagonist:
can now run a 15 km at the pace of the 5 km he had initially. runs faster than ever, has improved heart rate and cardiovascular fitness.
And while the heat waves have put an end to his daily routine, he has been able to adapt his training to avoid the sun, which puts the body under additional stress.

However, he is only halfway through his ChatGPT half-marathon program and fully intends to complete it and run as best he can.
He is already considering the next step, entrusting his new “coach” with the preparation of his future marathon… and you?
