Borussia Dortmund, FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Lazio Rome made it to the round of 16 in the Champions League on Tuesday. BVB managed a 3-1 win at AC Milan in the “horror” Group F, meaning the Germans can no longer be pushed out of the top two. Paris St. Germain managed a late 1-1 draw once morest Newcastle United and are second behind Dortmund. Defending champions Manchester City beat RB Leipzig 3-2 following being 2-0 down.
BVB keeper Gregor Kobel shone with a penalty save once morest Olivier Giroud in the 6th minute at San Siro in Milan. On the other side, Marco Reus did better from the spot and put the guests in the lead (10th). The equalizer was scored by Nigerian Samuel Chukwueze following a great individual action (37th) in front of Italy’s tennis star and Milan fan Jannik Sinner. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens once more gave the visitors the lead following an assist from Marcel Sabitzer, who played through (59′). The ex-Salzburg player Karim Adeyemi closed the bag a little later (69th).
Alexander Isak gave Newcastle the lead in Paris (24th). PSG goalie Gianluigi Donnarumma didn’t look good when he blocked a shot from Miguel Almiron at the feet of Isak. The Swede had no trouble netting. Kylian Mbappé scored the important equalizer for the French with a penalty in the 98th minute. Dortmund have ten points, three more than the Parisians, who travel to BVB in the final round in December. Newcastle and Milan each have five points and now need Dortmund’s help.
There was nothing to gain in Group E for Feyenoord Rotterdam with captain Gernot Trauner (until 64th) at home once morest Atletico Madrid. The Spaniards deservedly won 3-1 and can therefore celebrate their early promotion just as much as Lazio. The Italians had previously won once morest Celtic Glasgow thanks to a brace from Ciro Immobile (82nd, 85th). The Scots are eliminated, while Feyenoord is third.
Barcelona can also plan for the round of 16. The Catalans turned a 0-1 deficit once morest Porto into a 2-1 win in Pool H with goals from Joao Cancelo (32′) and Joao Felix (57′). Shakhtar Donetsk beat Royal Antwerp 1-0 in their “home game” in Hamburg and now have a final once morest FC Porto with the same points in mid-December. Antwerp, with no points, is firmly in last place.
Defending champions Manchester City even made up a 2-0 deficit in Group G once morest Leipzig. The Saxons, who had Nicolas Seiwald and Xaver Schlager in the starting line-up and Christoph Baumgartner came on following an hour, cleverly countered the English champions before the break. Lois Openda was on the top scorer list twice (13th, 33rd).
In the second half, Guardiola’s troops, consisting of Erling Haaland (54th), Phil Foden (70th) and Julian Alvarez (87th), struck back and thus secured group victory. Both teams had already been promoted. Meanwhile, Aleksandar Dragovic, captain of Red Star Belgrade, was unable to prevent a 2-0 defeat in Bern and thus their departure from the European Cup.
