Buying Russian defense systems is expensive for Turkey, the US Congress has approved the economic sanctions bill

The US Congress passed a bill to impose economic sanctions on Turkey for buying Russian defense systems.

The US Congress on Friday approved a Defense Department budget bill that includes a provision authorizing sanctions against Turkey on the purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system.

More than two-thirds of the Senate voted in favor of the $740 billion budget, which US President Donald Trump had opposed and threatened to veto.

However, the US House of Representatives approved the bill last Tuesday with enough votes to override a presidential veto.

The current president avoided sanctions on Ankara to avoid angering Turkey, but the incoming US administration led by newly elected President Joe Biden plans to be tougher on Turkey.

The US sanctions will target Turkey’s defense industry, administration and its head, Ismail Damir.

On the other hand, a senior Turkish official says that US sanctions against Turkey will harm the relations between the two countries, because the US and Turkey are members of NATO, how can one member state impose sanctions on the other.

The senior Turkish official said that the US sanctions will not yield any results, this is not a constructive thought.
