Best Buy stores will stop selling DVDs and Blu-rays as early as 2024, a sign that digital is surpassing older technologies.
With the rise in popularity of online viewing platforms and the purchase of digital versions of films, everything suggests that DVDs and Blu-Ray discs will soon become obsolete like VHS tapes.
According to a survey conducted by Statista Consumer Insights, only 30% of Americans still watch movies on DVD or Blu-ray.
“To state the obvious, the way we watch movies and TV shows is very different today than it was several decades ago. This change gives us more space and opportunity to offer customers new and innovative technologies that they can explore, discover and enjoy,” a spokesperson for the retail chain told CBS MoneyWatch.
So, following the holiday season, movies on disc will be removed from Best Buy shelves. However, video game discs will remain available.
