Businessman Pierre Karl Péladeau will acquire the François-Xavier-Garneau house, a residence that once belonged to one of the most famous historians in the history of Quebec.
The residence, which dates from the Victorian era, was sold for the sum of $515,000 in addition to the furniture.
Owner for 25 years of this heritage-listed building, champion cyclist and businessman Louis Garneau put the house up for sale on May 8.
Worried regarding the future of the latter to have difficulty closing his eyes, he is now delighted to see that this piece of the collective heritage will be in good hands.
“It’s really good news and it starts my summer well. It’s like a dream to see someone as passionate as me take over this house,” said Louis Garneau.
“I am very happy that it is Pierre Karl, a great lover of culture, history and someone very patriotic at the same time,” he adds.
A possible opening to the public
According to him and to the great pleasure of many, the house would also be open to the public at certain specific times of the year.
Given the costs associated with maintenance and opening it to the public, Mr. Garneau specifies that he might not sell the property to the first comer and that he wanted to find a buyer who would know how to take care of it. and cherish it with the same passion he has since 1998.
“Not just anyone can buy a house like this. There are people who have money, but who don’t have a passion for culture, history and heritage. Fortunately, this is not the case with Pierre Karl”, he raises.
Louis Garneau would also like the handover to take place on June 24, on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, so that everything is even more meaningful. This will depend on when approval from the Ministry of Culture and Communications is given.
A historical monument
Even today, this house built in 1864 still has its charm of yesteryear, because it has always been preserved and treated with care by successive owners.
Virtually nothing has changed since its inception. For example, the original woodwork is still intact, as is a rich library of a hundred books, all of inestimable value.
Pierre Karl Péladeau will continue in this line, having agreed to buy all the furniture there. The house, proud of a past full of stories, will therefore be able to continue to bear witness to the bourgeoisie that prevailed at the time when François-Xavier Garneau lived there.
