According to the most recent data released by Business Map from the federal government, Brazilian states managed to reduce the time it took to open a company from 4 days and 10 hours in 2019 to just 1 day and 2 hours in 2023, a 71% reduction in time in five years. This number is the record in the federal government’s historical survey since even in relation to 2022, the reduction in time to open a company was 23%.
The total time it takes to open a company takes into account the time in the feasibility stage, the registration validation that agencies carry out and the time it takes to complete the registration and obtain the CNPJ. Municipal or state registration times or obtaining licenses to operate the business are not taken into account.
In addition to this significant achievement, other data reveal important changes in the country’s business ecosystem:
- Growth in business openings: Despite the increase in extinctions, Brazil also saw an increase in the number of open companies. This number reached a peak in 2021 with 4,030,703 new companies, indicating a robust entrepreneurial spirit and a dynamic economy, capable of generating new business opportunities even in challenging times.
- Evolution in the branch sector: The branch sector also shows stable growth. The number of open branches gradually increased from 89,660 in 2019 to 103,582 in 2023. This increase suggests a continued expansion of already established businesses, reflecting businesspeople’s confidence in the Brazilian economy.
- Increase in company extinctions: A fact that draws attention is the continuous increase in the number of extinct companies, rising from 1,196,217 in 2019 to 2,153,840 in 2023. This increase may reflect a series of factors, including the impact of the pandemic and market dynamics, where companies that are less competitive or adapted to new realities are naturally replaced by more innovative and resilient ones.
According to Rafael Caribé, CEO of Streamline Online Accountingwhich assists thousands of companies in opening their CNPJs, these trends point to a business environment in Brazil that is becoming increasingly agile and adaptable, offering fertile ground for innovation and economic growth.
“The reduction in company opening, viability and registration times not only makes life easier for entrepreneurs, but also encourages the entry of new players into the market, strengthening the economy as a whole”, he comments.
The scenario is particularly promising for new entrepreneurs and investors looking to take advantage of opportunities in a rapidly evolving market. With more efficient processes and a vibrant business environment, Brazil positions itself as an attractive destination for entrepreneurship and innovation.
In this scenario, technology is a great ally in reducing bureaucratic processes and one of the factors that make up the scenario shown by the 2023 numbers. “Technological evolution has been helping Brazilian entrepreneurs from opening to business management. As a result, more and more people are implementing their business plans, whether with online accounting, digital banks and the ease of creating corporate accounts; advances in government portals; management software, increasingly integrated, etc.”, explains Caribé.
Although challenges persist, especially in relation to the growing number of defunct companies, the data indicates a balance between the closure of businesses and the opening of new companies, reflecting the natural dynamics of a healthy and changing economy.
Bahia and São Paulo stand out in terms of opening times for companies in 2023
In an economic scenario where every second counts, Brazil has demonstrated notable progress in reducing the average time to open a business, as evidenced by a comparative analysis of 2022 and 2023 data from the federal government’s Mapa das Empresas. This advance reflects not only a change in the country’s business dynamics, but also a promise of greater agility and efficiency in the business environment.
National Highlight: Bahia’s surprising improvement
Bahia stood out with an impressive reduction in the average business opening time, falling from around 71.1 hours in 2022 to approximately 14.4 hours in 2023. This is a notable example of efficiency, placing the state as a model for administrative and bureaucratic reforms .
São Paulo and Santa Catarina: great states, great advances
São Paulo, the country’s economic giant, also showed a significant improvement, reducing the average time from 79.9 hours in 2022 to 57.6 hours in 2023. Although it is still the state with the longest average time, this change indicates a conscious effort to facilitate entrepreneurship. Likewise, Santa Catarina showed a reduction of almost 20 hours, going from 68.8 hours to 49.1 hours in the same period.
Consistency in Minas Gerais: admirable stability
Minas Gerais deserves a special mention for its consistency, maintaining a practically unchanged average time of around 48.7 hours over the two years. This stability suggests a system already optimized for starting companies.
Brazilian Regions: Large-scale improvements
Taking a broader look, all five regions of Brazil showed significant improvements. The Southeast region, although it still has the longest average time, reduced from 63.8 hours to 50.1 hours. The Central-West region led in efficiency, decreasing from 33.8 hours to approximately 23 hours.
Conclusion: Towards a more agile business future
In short, Brazil is paving the way to become one of the most promising countries for opening new companies, demonstrating a commitment to efficiency and innovation in the business scenario. This progress not only benefits national entrepreneurs, but also attracts attention from international investors, positioning the country as an attractive destination for business development.
