“At the restaurant, customers tighten their belts”

This is the observation made by the president of the commercial court of Lille Métropole, Eric Feldmann. “Consumers come to restaurants less often. And when they do, they take a dish, a carafe of water and no coffee. Customers are tightening their belts.”

Another profession affected, that of real estate agents. The number of payment suspensions is exploding with a figure up from 195%** for these agencies. Pierre-Marie Wattremez is president of FNAIM in the North, the national real estate federation. For several months he has seen colleagues going out of business. “These include agencies established for years, particularly those with employees, who are facing a drop in sales. The government is observing a phenomenon without doing anything: the reluctance of banks which refuse loans to buyers who have nevertheless revenues!”

Prevention to avoid recovery

However, there are solutions, recalls the president of the commercial court, Eric Feldmann, who sees its structure a bit like the hospitable city of businesses. “We always prefer to heal businesses rather than pronounce their death!”

As part of the preventive measures, managers are received in complete confidentiality by the court which has a toolbox to help them, including a psychological support unit.
These preventive measures, the outcome of which is favorable in 70% of cases, have also increased in 2023. They represent 25,246 jobs which might be saved.
