Bus with Mexican tourists overturns heading to Machu Picchu

LIMA.- A bus carrying foreign tourists, including Mexicans, overturned on the road to the Inca stone citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru.

Alicia Bárcena, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), confirmed the accident of the bus where Mexican citizens were traveling.

At the moment nine tourists are reported injured.

“Unfortunate accident in Machu Pichu Peru in which there are Mexican people affected,” the official wrote in social networks.

Vanessa Calva, director of Consular Protection and Strategic Planningconfirmed that there are Mexicans injured, but did not specify how many or their state of health.

The bus belongs to the company Settledwhich takes visitors from Machu Picchu Pueblo to the stone citadel, and went off the road around noon.

Peruvian rescue and police teams are already there, while Mexican consular personnel in Lima have already activated protection and assistance protocols to care for the victims.

Police indicated there are 20 passengers on the bus. The injured were taken to a nearby health center.

Four Mexicans injured in accident in Machu Picchu, Peru

Jorge Polanco, injured compatriot, reported through the journalist Lourdes Mendoza to three seriously injured Mexicans “with broken legs and hips who do not know how to care for them.”

An hour after its report, the SRE indicated that four compatriots were injured. His health status is unknown.

In social networks Videos of the accident were released, in some of which the Mexican Foreign Minister was tagged so that she could attend to the case.
