Burundian Handball Players Seek Asylum in Belgium: U19 World Cup Controversy Explained

Their disappearance had been communicated at the beginning of August 2023. The Burundian handball players (or a large part of them, editor’s note) who were to take part in the U19 World Cup in Croatia were found… in Belgium, where they asked for asylum.

The information, published this Monday, September 4, 2023 in the columns of the newspaper “Het Nieuwsblad”, was confirmed by the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Nicole de Moor.

“I cannot comment on the specific files but many Burundians who arrive in Belgium fall under the responsibility of Croatia”, declared Sieggild Lacoere, the spokesperson for the secretary of state, to the Flemish daily. “This is also the case if, for example, you received a visa for a sports competition there. ”

Regretting the lax immigration policy of some Eastern European countries, Nicole de Moor’s cabinet has little room for maneuver in the case of Burundian players. And for good reason, they are minors (they are all 17, editor’s note) and therefore still have the right to asylum in Belgium.
