Burón Farmer Culls 115 Cows due to Bovine Tuberculosis Outbreak: Controversy over Regional Administration’s Handling of Livestock Health

A Burón farmer has decided to slaughter his 115 cows following one of them tested positive for bovine tuberculosis. The territorial Livestock Service of the Junta de Castilla y León met with him and offered him the Vox alternative of pardoning the cattle herd, but according to sources from the regional administration, the man decided “freely” to kill all the cattle and collect compensation than risk spreading the disease.

This new case of bovine tuberculosis in the Riaño mountain comes just one year following a very similar one in Lario, in which, on the contrary, the farmer asked to give his cows a second chance, following the visit of the regional vice president himself and leader of the far-right party in the Community, Juan García-Gallardo.

The territorial delegation of the Junta in León insists that the new case of disease in cows is “isolated” and that it does not affect the fact that the province remains declared “free of tuberculosis”. However, it comes in full controversy over the “flexibility” of the regional administration with the health of these animals, condemned by the Ministry, which has demanded that the Board back down.
