Burning of the Koran an “act of hate and intolerance”

“In my opinion, book burnings are always reprehensible, as they remind us of the darkest times in our history,” said the Archbishop of Vienna at the weekend. Schönborn referred to the burning of the Koran last week in Sweden, which had led to sharp criticism in Islamic countries. The destruction of holy books, of whatever religion, is “an act of intolerance and hatred that tramples on our basic Christian and civil values,” criticized Schönborn.

During a demonstration in Stockholm last Wednesday, for the first time in months, a copy of the Holy Scriptures of Islam was set on fire in front of a mosque. The police had previously approved the protest following other actions of this type were banned in February.

Swedish courts had ruled that the police did not have the right to refuse permission to burn the Koran.
