It’s the seventh month of the lunar calendar, and many people have the habit of going to incense and worshiping gods. A Taiwanese doctor recently shared a case on a social platform, saying that a 65-year-old woman in Thailand suffered from lung adenocarcinoma, which was suspected to be related to her burning incense for many years. Doctors pointed out that incense candles produced under industrialization can cause “squamous cell carcinoma”, so many large temples have stopped burning incense.

According to the Facebook page “Dr. Chen Bochen’s health clinic“, Taiwanese family physician Chen Bochen shared a case of lung cancer in a 65-year-old woman in Thailand. The 65-year-old woman was not a smoker herself. She had a physical examination every year and took X-rays of her lungs. The doctor later found a lump on the top of her left lung. A year later, the lump showed signs of growing.

The woman had no symptoms of cough, fever, fatigue, or chest pain. Although she had high blood pressure, she never smoked. However, she said that she had been used to lighting 20 incense sticks every Thursday at her workplace for six consecutive years.

The woman then underwent laparoscopic lung surgery. After a biopsy, the pathological results showed a 4cm-sized malignant tumor, which confirmed that she was suffering from 2A lung cancer, but it did not spread to the lymphatic line. After 7 years of follow-up and observation by the doctor, there was no sign of recurrence of lung cancer, and she stopped burning incense following the operation.

Chen Bochen pointed out that the incense candles used for worship may be a little different from the past. Incense produced in an industrialized situation can cause lung cancer (Squamous Cell Carcinoma SCC) and many large temples have stopped using incense. Chen Bochen reminded that if you want to use incense, you need to ensure that the room environment is ventilated. If there are high-risk groups related to lungs in the family, you also need to be careful.
