Burning ferry in the Mediterranean is evacuated

A fire broke out on a ferry with around 300 people on board near the island of Corfu. Passengers and crew were taken to the island of Corfu in lifeboats.

Hours following the fire broke out, smoke hangs over the “Euroferry Olympia”.

A fire broke out on Friday night on the passenger ship “Euroferry Olympia”, which was traveling from the western Greek port of Igoumenitsa to Brindisi in Italy. According to the crew, it spread rapidly from the hold and reached the deck following just 15 minutes. A little later the ship was completely on fire. The captain of the Italian-flagged ferry asked the 239 passengers and 51 crew members to leave the ship immediately. According to information from the Greek port police, almost all of them were taken to the port of Corfu island in lifeboats and other ships. Two passengers and one crew member were injured, according to rescue workers.
