In the Spreewald motorway triangle near Lübbenau (Oberspreewald-Lausitz) on the A 13, a burning car transporter caused a full closure for hours on Monday and kilometers of traffic jams in rush-hour traffic. The articulated lorry was traveling from Dresden to Berlin and had loaded electric cars.
After a technical defect, a wheel brake on the trailer blocked, the police said on Tuesday. “Due to the high heat, the trailer of the car transporter caught fire.” Four electric cars burned down and two others were damaged, police said. The truck driver was not injured.
According to the fire brigade, the electric cars had to be cooled once more and once more because the batteries reacted to the heat and ignited once more. “One electric vehicle in particular kept catching fire despite being completely foamed and cooled,” the police said. The cars were finally transferred to watertight containers and further cooled.
According to the police, the highway was closed for almost eight hours. As a result, there were “considerable traffic jams” on the detour routes. According to an initial estimate, the property damage is around 800,000 euros, according to the police.
