The elementary and middle schools were renovated and expanded for 21.5 million euros. The education center also has space for a kids club, followingnoon care and a library.

A wonderful autumn day with lots of sun and late summer temperatures provided the perfect setting for the opening ceremony for the Bürmoos Education Center. Mayor Cornelia Ecker (SPÖ) took a load off her heart. “We didn’t have a plan B for the outdoor celebrations, so everything was ideal,” says the local mayor happily.

Two years of construction, 220 piles were driven

Through renovation and expansion, the elementary school and middle school became the new Bürmoos education center. This was preceded by an intensive two-year construction period, which began with the demolition of the old middle wing in July 2021. The difficult ground conditions in Bürmoos also had to be taken into account.

“A total of 220 piles were driven for the pile foundation in order to ensure long-term stability,” reports the chairman of the building committee, vice mayor. Peter Eder, who accompanied the project from the beginning with a team led by building authority manager Yvonne Herzberger. “It was our goal to get the best out of it for children and teachers,” said Eder. The facade design refers to the history of the industrial community with its peat-colored elements. Particular emphasis was placed on the use of predominantly renewable raw materials such as wood. A photovoltaic system with a total output of 88 kWp covers the energy needs of the education center.

While the initial planning assumed construction costs of seven million euros, the total that was ultimately necessary for implementation was 21.5 million euros.

68.8 percent of the costs from GAF funds

“The budget was adhered to. Of course, the construction was only possible for us with the support of the state, which contributed 68.8 percent of the costs from GAF funds,” adds Mayor Cornelia Ecker. “We are now one of the most modern school locations, to which the MINT focus contributes significantly, because mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology are essential components in our schools.”

The 380 school children at both schools, 253 of whom are at the elementary school, and the total of 45 teachers benefit from contemporary rooms and space for open forms of learning. A state-of-the-art ventilation system ensures an optimal room climate.

“The school has been in operation since the beginning of the new school year. We are pleased with the contemporary design, even if it still takes a while until everything is fully functional,” said primary school director Brigitte Koper.

Middle school director Elisabeth Switil adds: “The students are the focus. With the new circumstances we can do even better justice to our MINT mission statement of ‘experience, discover, explore’.”

Container classes are reused for other purposes

It’s not just the two schools that benefit. The rooms for the kids club and the followingnoon care have also been upgraded with their own cooking kitchen. The public library, which is also integrated, is available to the entire community. A spacious auditorium with seating steps in the middle wing will serve as an event location not only for the schools, but also for the community.

For the renovation phase of the schools, the municipality purchased container classes for 3.2 million euros, which are used in Bürmoos, for example for the kindergarten. Clubs have also already expressed interest.
