Burkina Faso’s Gold Refinery: Achieving Sovereignty in Gold Production

2024-01-02 03:43:33

Burkina Faso is one of the West African countries with a large gold production capacity. The country produced 58 tonnes in 2023 and the trend is not expected to change in 2024.

However, Burkina Faso cannot refine its gold. It is exported to Switzerland to be polished. This state of affairs is not beneficial for the country of honest men.

In order to change the situation, the country launched this year the construction of a refinery with an annual production capacity of 150 tonnes d’or 99.99% pure, or approximately 400 kg per day.

This refinery will be built in the upscale district of Ouaga2000

According to the country’s new leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, from now on, Burkina Faso will no longer refine the gold it produces in another country. For the transitional president, it is a question of sovereignty.

This new unit will house the National Company for Precious Substances, which aims to promote mining products.

“In the environment of gold production in Burkina, for a long time we were told that we were not a gold producing country, but for some time, gold has become the leading export product .

We have no control over gold, whether (over) research, production, refinery.

Today we decided to put a whole channel together. It will no longer be a question of us taking our gold outside to be refined. We refine it on site, we know what the real content of the raw gold that comes out is”noted captain Ibrahim Traoré.

The refinery will produce its first gold bars at the end of 2024. This unit will create 100 direct jobs and more than 5,000 indirect jobs.
