Burkina Faso: musical holidays to introduce young people to the practice of traditional instruments

#Other countries : Organized by the “Bãwfu-Yir” cultural center, the Musical Holidays have announced their colors for the 2022 season. As a bonus, innovations to better promote Burkinabe culture.

For the promoters, it is an activity that has demonstrated for three years now its importance in the development of gross motor skills in adults and children alike.

“See, they’ve been there for almost a month now. They rub shoulders, there are friendships that are born, a brotherhood between these children. While playing, they learn something. We are not without ignoring either that art contributes to developing the intelligence quotient of children and adolescents”, argues Maximilien Somé, head of the cultural center “Bãwfu-Yir”.

On the program of the various training workshops, dance, plastic arts and the practice of modern musical instruments but also those typically Burkinabè like the calabash, the kièma, the kundé or the bendré (drum-calabash). This year, around 100 participants were registered.

“It’s funny. We first learn the origin of bendré, how it is made, etc. We are also taught to play melodies. The one we just executed was the “Warba”. It’s fun and it’s a great experience,” rejoices Chloé, a very young learner.

The Musical Holidays are organized every year. This program exists in two versions: for children from 4 years old during the day and for adults in the evening.
