Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Health, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a four-day nationwide polio vaccination campaign on Friday, aimed at immunizing 4.6 million children under the age of five, we learned from official sources.

This vaccination campaign is launched to boost children’s immunity and protect them from this deadly disease, the Burkinabè Ministry of Health and its partners said in a statement.

With the support of WHO, 22,940 mobile vaccinators will crisscross the 13 regions to give children oral drops, protecting them once morest poliomyelitis, according to the same source.

To cover 4.6 million children and prevent vaccine shortages, UNICEF transported 5.3 million doses of vaccine to Burkina Faso. It also supports 2,450 staff members for the collection of vaccine vials and opens access to incinerators for the management of biomedical waste and to reduce the risk of contamination.

Poliomyelitis is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects children under the age of five.

Since 2016, Burkina Faso has not reported any cases of wild poliovirus. From 2019 to December 2022, 73 cases of vaccine-derived poliovirus have been reported in the country.
