Burkina Faso: ECOWAS leaders call for the ”unconditional release” of President Kaboré

Dakar, March 26 (APS) – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has once again demanded the “unconditional release” of President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, overthrown on January 24 , by a coup d’etat and urged the military in power to work towards the rapid finalization of an acceptable transition schedule.

The leaders of ECOWAS, meeting in an extraordinary summit on Friday in Accra (Ghana), notably expressed their “deep concern over the continued detention of the former Burkinabé president despite demands for his unconditional release.

In the communiqué sanctioning the meeting, the leaders of the community space also considered that the transitional authorities in Burkina Faso were struggling to improve the security situation in the country and to find solutions to the humanitarian situation.

”The Conference of Heads of State remains very concerned about the duration of the transition period set at thirty-six (36) months by the Transition Charter”, reports the document.

The Conference of ECOWAS Heads of State has thus decided to maintain the suspension of Burkina Faso from all ECOWAS Institutions until the restoration of constitutional order.

“It requests the finalization of an acceptable timetable for the transition no later than April 25, 2022. After this deadline, economic and financial sanctions will come into force immediately,” the statement said.
