In Côte d’Ivoire, the Head of State mobilizes the National Security Council to manage the strong exodus of displaced people from Burkina Faso.
This situation is a matter of concern between the Ivorian government and the leaders of the Burkinabè transition. In recent weeks, Alassane Ouattara has expressed his concern at the influx of people fleeing both the atrocities of the army, terrorist groups, but also the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), the civilian auxiliaries security forces. In March, the president instructed Fidèle Sarassoro, his chief of staff and executive secretary of the National Security Council (CNS), to do so.
Possible infiltration of jihadists
The latter brought together the heads of the diplomatic missions present in the country, in order to raise their awareness of the situation. The CNS, chaired by Alassane Ouattara, has also ordered the census and identification of all the refugees, as well as their regrouping on a single site. For the moment, they live with the Ivorian populations. But the authorities want to build an accommodation center to accommodate all the displaced people, estimated at more than 10,000.
Delegations of Ivorian security crats went to the regions concerned in order to draw up an inventory. A site of more than 14 hectares has been identified near Kong, in the far north, one of the affluent areas. Still, the country needs external contributions.
Alassane Ouattara’s other concern is a possible infiltration of jihadists into the ranks of refugees in order to carry out attacks in the country, at a time when all of Côte d’Ivoire is mobilized for preparations for the African Cup of Nations. (CAN 2023), which it will house from January 2024.
