In order to offer local and international patients the opportunity to undergo kidney transplantation in private hospitals in Abu Dhabi, Burjeel Medical City (BMC) started performing kidney transplants. The first of these was successfully performed on a patient from Kazakhstan at BMC, a quaternary health center of excellence that reports to Burjeel Holdings.

The patient had terminal renal failure and had been undergoing dialysis since March 2022. “The patient was in good physical condition and had no other contraindications. The surgery was performed following both the patient and the donor (patient’s nephew) underwent extensive evaluations and were deemed fit for the procedure,” said Dr. Rehan Saif, Director of Transplant Surgery at BMC.
Dr. Venkat S Vellanki, Consultant Nephrologist at BMC, who was also part of the medical team, noted: “Very few institutions can offer 360-degree, 24/7 care to kidney patients with complex medical needs. under one roof. The donor surgery was performed using the latest 3D laparoscopic technology, a minimally invasive method intended to improve donor safety. After the donor surgery, which lasted four hours, the graft preparation lasted 45 minutes. The recipient’s surgery was completed in four hours. According to the medical team, both the patient and the donor are recovering satisfactorily.
