Burglary of a jewelry store in Schaerbeek: the arrested suspect escaped

A suspect arrested for the burglary of a jewelry store in Schaerbeek escaped during his transfer to prison, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday, confirming information given Monday by Sudinfo. The Brussels-North police (Schaerbeek, Evere and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode) were called on Sunday June 19 around 7:30 p.m. for a thief, held down by two private individuals, who allegedly broke into a jewelry store on Chaussée de Haecht.

He would have passed by a neighboring building. Once in the building housing the jewelry store, he would have had a violent altercation with the caretaker. “The individual would then have fled in the opposite direction, and might have been intercepted by the occupants of the neighboring building”, explained the Brussels public prosecutor’s office a few days following the events.

The suspect was charged with attempted murder to facilitate theft, possession of a firearm subject to authorization and concealment. He was placed under arrest warrant Monday of last week by the investigating judge. It was during his transfer to the Brussels prison that the suspect managed to escape the vigilance of the police.
