Last Saturday at around 4:15 a.m., a cigarette vending machine in Wernstein, Schärding district, was broken into and an unknown quantity of cigarettes was stolen. The Schärding criminal investigation team then began intensive investigations.
Officials were able to clear up the break-in just two days following the break-in. A 14-year-old, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old boy, all from the Schärding district, met on Saturday night to break open the cigarette machine.
The three suspects met in advance in the city of Schärding, with the 14-year-old already short-circuiting someone else’s moped and putting it into operation without authorization. The trio drove to the crime scene on a moped. The 14-year-old and the 16-year-old first cut the power supply and cut a hole in the glass front with an angle grinder. As a result, they smashed the already damaged pane of glass with a hammer and stole cigarettes, snus and e-cigarettes. The 15-year-old acted as a watchdog.
After the crime, the boys drove away on their mopeds in the direction of Schärding, whereupon they separated and divided up the loot. The 14-year-old returned to the scene of the crime a little later, together with another 15-year-old from the Schärding district, to steal more cigarettes.
The boys stole a total of around 200 packs of cigarettes, snus and e-cigarettes. Some of the stolen goods have already been sold by the perpetrators and given away to friends. In the course of the investigation, almost 150 packs were seized. The perpetrators confessed to the facts and are being reported to the Ried public prosecutor’s office and to the Schärding district authority.
