Today, Tuesday evening, three prizes from the state of Burgenland in the areas of art and culture were awarded at the KUGA in Großwarasdorf. These are an “important sign of recognition and appreciation for the achievements of Burgenland’s cultural workers and an expression of a lively culture and art scene. Art and culture, in all its facets and forms of expression, are essential parts of our identity,” said State Governor Hans Peter Doskozil, who presented the awards in his role as cultural officer.
The Burgenland State Literature Prize 2023 went to Raoul Eisele from Eisenstadt. For his artistic work, Ralo Mayer from Eisenstadt was awarded the Burgenland State Prize for Contemporary Fine Art 2023. The winners of the architecture awards are Hausdorf Civiltechniker Architekten GmbH, INNOCAD architecture and the architectural firm DI Dietmar Gasser. The architect collective ViA ZT KG also received a recognition award. Two large art scholarships, each worth 12,000 euros, were awarded for the first time: Johannes Hoffmann received the large art scholarship for performing arts, and Konstantin Vlasich was honored with the large art scholarship for literature.
The state of Burgenland promotes the local art and culture scene in a variety of ways. In the first half of 2023 alone, more than 3.5 million euros in project funding and scholarships were awarded to artists to support them at the beginning of their careers. Last year, the Burgenland art and science prizes were massively upgraded – all prize money was significantly increased. “We want to offer artists and cultural workers effective and accurate support. Especially in challenging times, we provide an important impulse and show how much we need Burgenland culture,” explains cultural officer, Governor Hans Peter Doskozil. This is how the cultural voucher “project,” which was conceived in 2020 as a Corona measure, became a permanent facility. Today over 140 artists and cultural institutions from Burgenland use this support instrument. With 25% support for art purchases, it was possible to significantly boost the Burgenland art market, says Doskozil. Furthermore, a new service point was created that offers advice to artists and creative people. In order to cushion price increases, the funding budget in the cultural sector was increased. In addition, numerous other innovative formats adapted to the Burgenland art scene were developed or further developed. Just last week, the Burgenland State Theater of Authors and the band festival series NEXT GENERATION were introduced.
Several prizes and awards have now been presented, with the award decisions being made by various specialist juries, each made up of renowned experts – namely:
Literature Prize: Raoul Eisele for “Attempt to empathize”
The state of Burgenland has been awarding literary prizes since 1993, and since 2004 alternately for a completed work or for a work in progress, in the form of a scholarship. Since then, 15 female and eleven authors have received awards. This year a literary prose or work in progress was advertised, the prize is endowed with 5,000 euros. The jury of experts decided on “Experiment with Empathy” by Raoul Eisele.
Raoul Eisele was born in Eisenstadt in 1991 and lives in Vienna, where he studied German and comparative literature. Aside from poetry, he works in the theater and in radio play productions. He is a member of the GAV (Graz Authors’ Assembly), co-founder of the magazine process*in and the reading series Mondmeer & Marguérite.
Contemporary Fine Art: Promotion Prize for Ralo Mayer
The Prize for Contemporary Fine Art 2023 was announced by the cultural department of the Office of the Burgenland State Government as a recognition prize for artistic creation in order to honor and support the artists associated with Burgenland. For the first time, submissions were made digitally via an online platform. The prize, worth 5,000 euros, was awarded to Ralo Mayer.
Ralo Mayer was born in Eisenstadt in 1976 and spent his childhood and youth there. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the Royal Academy of Arts Copenhagen and received a doctorate in artistic research at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. His multidisciplinary works examine the forms and temporalities of social change and mostly deal with the relationship between space and earth, between past futures, speculative scenarios and the science fiction of our everyday lives.
Large art scholarship for performing arts: Johannes Hoffmann
In 2023, the cultural department announced two major art scholarships in the fields of literature and performing arts for the first time. This is intended to make it easier for artists to implement the entire preparation, conceptualization and realization phase of an artistic project.
Johannes Hoffmann was awarded the major art scholarship in the performing arts category worth 12,000 euros.
Johannes Hoffmann is an author, actor and transdisciplinary artist. He has been working as a freelance artist since 2013 and writes primarily for the stage. His plays, for which he has received multiple awards and scholarships, are performed on national and international stages. In his pieces he deals with places and figures in the “in between”. His characters reside in laboratory-like settings, isolated places between reality and imagination. With his strongly rhythmic language and the short, fragmentary scenes, which usually do not require stage directions, he creates a dense, atmospheric language space.
Large art scholarship for literature: Konstantin Milena Vlasich
The Great Art Scholarship for Literature, also endowed with 12,000 euros, was awarded to Konstantin Milena Vlasich for his literary project “Death to Language Death”.
Konstantin Milena Vlasich was born in 1992 and grew up bilingually in Großwarasdorf/Veliki Borištof. As a freelance journalist, presenter and author, he lives and works in Vienna and Burgenland. Since his youth he has been involved in politics and multilingual, artistic activities. In his text concept “Death to Language Death” Vlasich creates several historical strands concerning the ethnic groups, ranging from the shipwreck to the building instructions for a “Krowodian” virtual reality world.
Prize for Contemporary Architecture: three winners, one recognition prize
Since 2002, the state of Burgenland has been awarding the architecture prize for outstanding contemporary architecture in Burgenland every two years. The award of this prize recognizes buildings that make an outstanding contribution to contemporary architecture in the country and can be described as particularly exemplary in terms of aesthetics and innovation. The focus is on the specific building culture of our country, which developed from history and the landscape (climate, agricultural structure, etc.) and makes Burgenland unique compared to other federal states.
This year, three equivalent prizes and one award were awarded. The prizes went to:

The architect collective ViA ZT KG received an award for the Pöttelsdorf village center.
