Burgenland freezes rents for two years and caps electricity and gas

Burgenland presented another package against inflation on Wednesday. The focus is on rental and, once again, energy costs.

In both areas, a kind of cover will be drawn in, explained Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ), Stephan Sharma, Chairman of the Board of Burgenland Energie, and Alfred Kollar, Chairman of the Oberwart settlement cooperative.

As part of a housing cost cap, the rents of around 9,700 apartments will be frozen at the December 2022 level to absorb price increases associated with variable loans. This is justified by the fact that the tenants could not decide for themselves on the form of credit, i.e. fixed or variable.

On the part of the state, non-repayable interest subsidies are paid to the housing cooperatives. These in turn refrain from further rent increases in the wake of rising interest rates. In addition, the state will suspend annuity jumps in housing subsidies.

The total volume of the housing cost cap this year is around ten million euros. In addition, there are own funds from the Burgenland housing cooperatives, which are to be used to stabilize rents.

Fixed price for energy costs

Also presented were new tariffs from Burgenland Energie for private and business customers up to an annual consumption of 100,000 kWh, which municipalities can also take advantage of.

“12 months independent” is the name of the new offer, which guarantees a fixed price for electricity of 23 cents per kWh and for gas of 9.99 cents per kWh. It is possible to switch to this from April, the term is twelve months.
