Destiny 2 cannot currently be played on Steam Deck, and those trying to circumvent the restrictions may be banned.
in update His support page For Destiny 2 to coincide with the launch of Steam Deck, developer Bungie said the game is not supported on the new Valve mobile device or any device that uses Proton, Valve’s Linux solution to run Windows-compatible games.
Destiny 2 can be installed but not run on Proton, and “players who attempt to circumvent the incompatibility will be banned from the game,” according to the page.
Bungie notes that Destiny 2 can work if “Windows is installed and running,” but that’s not currently possible on Steam Deck. As we noted in our ongoing Steam Deck review, Windows can be installed, but due to the presence of an unreleased graphics driver for the device’s GPU, it cannot run effectively.
We added: “It all boils down to pretty much the fact that Steam Deck runs by default on Valve’s SteamOS – a custom version of Linux that can run many Windows games using a program called Proton.
“It’s really, really cool when it works, but a lot of popular games including Fortnite, Halo Infinite, Destiny 2, and Lost Ark use anti-cheat systems that are incompatible with Proton.”
This means that players are currently unable to play Destiny 2 on Steam Deck without messing around, and as Bungie pointed out, it’s probably not worth the risk.
Steam Deck had other startup issues following its launch on February 25, such as drift issues, and the currently most popular game in gaming, Elden Ring, isn’t working well, even though Valve has already fixed it.
Overall, IGN stated that “the Steam Deck is a well-built device that’s nice to keep and run”, but “not the smooth user experience” we had hoped for.
