Leverkusen with horror start!
Historic false start!
After the cup loss in Elversberg (3:4) and the league defeat at BVB (0:1), Leverkusen suffered their third competitive defeat in a row, also lost 1:2 to Augsburg and are now bottom of the table.
The club has never started a season so badly since they were promoted to the Bundesliga in 1979. Only in the 2018/19 season did they get off to a similarly bad start. The Werkself survived the first round of the cup there, but then lost the first three league games.
Horror start for Leverkusen!
In the game the early shock: After a great combination from Augsburg, Jensen appeared free in front of Bayer keeper Lunev (replaced the suspended Hradecky for the second league appearance), tipped the ball into the far corner with the first shot on goal to make it 1-0 (15th).
As a result, Leverkusen made an unusual number of mistakes in the build-up game. In between, there are even occasional whistles in front of the grandstand. Azmoun (34th) missed the best opportunity for the hosts.
Adli, who celebrated his comeback four months following his tendon surgery in his thigh, is threatened with a forced break once more. The attacking player is on the way to the hospital with a shoulder injury.
But: Aránguiz equalized just before the break. A blocked shot by Hlozek lands on the Chilean, who scores with a dropkick to make it 1:1 (43rd) – his first home goal in over 3 years.
After the break, coach Seoane’s team (became a father for the fourth time on Thursday) was the much better team. But Leverkusen misses one chance following the other and keeps failing due to the outstanding Augsburg keeper Gikiewicz. Alone Diaby (53rd/60th/73rd) had the lead on the foot several times.
And so Hahn finally put the Werkself in crisis, hitting a well-placed shot next to the right post to give Augsburg a 2-1 win (82′) and ensured Augsburg’s first win once morest Leverkusen in Bundesliga history.
Former sports boss Völler is not in the stadium for the first home game since leaving. His mother Ilse († 94) had died the day before.
