The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) has announced the withdrawal of commemorative coins issued in 2019 from circulation, effective February 3, 2025. This decision, based on Article 26 of the law on the Bulgarian National Bank, ensures these coins remain in circulation long enough to fulfill their commemorative purpose.
To get a better understanding of this move, we sat down with dr. Lilia Georgieva, Director of Currency Management at the BNB.
“The withdrawal of these coins is a procedural move, mainly due to Section 26 of the Law on the Bulgarian National Bank,” Dr. Georgieva explained. “This section stipulates that commemorative coins cease to be legal tender six years after they’ve been issued. The six-year period ensures that the coins remain in use long enough to fulfill their purpose of commemorating specific events, while encouraging their eventual return to the currency cycle.”
But what about coinholders who may not be aware of this change? The BNB has extended the exchange period until December 31, 2026, ensuring everyone has ample time to exchange their coins for their face value at BNB cash desks, without any limitations or fees.”We understand that it might take some time for everyone to become aware of the withdrawal and to have the chance to exchange their coins,” Dr. Georgieva remarked. “By extending the exchange period, we hope to ensure that all Bulgarians have a fair chance to exchange their coins for their face value without any prejudices.”
Looking towards the future, the transition to the euro will undoubtedly bring changes to the world of Bulgarian currency.
“The transition to the euro will indeed bring changes, but the essence of commemorative coins will remain,” Dr. Georgieva assured us. “they will continue to serve as a way to mark vital moments in Bulgaria’s history. Though, their design, production process, and circulation period may evolve to align with the euro’s requirements and our new economic context.”
