Building a New Crematorium in Namur: Meeting the Growing Demand for Cremation Services

In death as in life, there are fashions, trends but also great options that end up lasting. Cremation is one of these. In Flanders, six out of ten deceased are now cremated. Five in Wallonia. “But we also end up following the same curves”, we report to the Economic Office of the Province (BEP).

Direct impact of the rising numbers: existing crematoriums are increasingly experiencing periods of saturation. This is the case of the Ciney site, launched regarding ten years ago, already with the support of the BEP. The idea was therefore to find a new site to build a second crematorium on provincial soil in Namur. “To get closer to the needs of the population and not to compete with the already existing infrastructures, we therefore favored the north of the province”, details Ingrid Bertrand, for the BEP.

The chosen site is one hectare, along the road to La Bruyère, near the “Lidl” roundregarding, at the entrance to Eghezée.

“There were several criteria: access to major communication routes, the least impact on the landscape but also and above all the possible connection to gas for the energy source”, we continue at the BEP. The various boxes are therefore checked.

Compared to Ciney, the Eghezian infrastructure will be smaller. “Initially, only one cremation line is planned. There were two at Ciney and three now following the extension”, develops Ingrid Bertrand.

The project also includes a meditation room but no reunion room. For the cup of coffee and the sandwiches, other places are available in the region, it is estimated at the Economic Office. 85 parking spaces will also be provided.

The BEP once more provides for private-public collaboration, as is the case with the company “Crématoriums de France” for Ciney, which manages the infrastructure.

The permit application will soon be submitted, a public inquiry and an impact study will also be carried out. “Reasonably, the crematorium will begin its activities in 2026 or 2027,” we forecast at the BEP. The demand will be even more pressing.
