Finding land to build housing is the solution to the root cause. The Secretary for Transport and Housing, Chen Fan, published a blog today (28th), saying that the Hong Kong government has now found regarding 350 hectares of land, enough to build 330,000 public housing units, which can meet the needs of the next ten years. Demand for 301,000 public housing units. The authorities have also promoted transitional housing to provide housing for the grassroots and ease the burden of rent. Up to now, the transitional housing units (5,215) that have been put into service, together with those that have started construction (2,587), have tendered (10,960), and have started preliminary work (1,651), and projects under consideration (1,176), the authorities will launch more than 20,000 transitional housing units.

In June last year, the Legislative Council approved the first HK$5 billion “Subsidy Scheme to Support NGOs in Implementing Transitional Housing Projects” to provide financial support to NGOs to comprehensively promote transitional housing construction. Since the launch of the plan, 30 NGOs have participated, reflecting the strong demand for transitional housing in the society. The government’s goal of providing 10,000 units has been increased twice to the current 20,000 units. The appropriation was also increased twice to HK$11.6 billion.

In addition, in order to assist and relieve the living burden of families living in unsuitable housing, the authorities have launched the “Trial Scheme on Cash Allowance” and “Rent Control for Subsidiary Housing” to relieve their financial pressure and protect the tenants of subdivided housing.
