Professor Britta Larsen’s research team at the University of California, San Diego, conducted a study to confirm the correlation between muscle composition and cardiovascular disease. The research team used data from the National Institutes of Health’s study on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors by race, gender, and age. Computed tomography (CT) was performed on the L2 to L4 region of the abdomen in 1,869 adults without cardiovascular disease and other diseases, divided into groups according to muscle density and area, and the incidence of total cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease (CHD), and stroke was determined. The risk was analyzed after tracking for approximately 10.3 years.

As a result, women’s abdominal muscles had no correlation with their risk of cardiovascular disease. However, in men, the higher the abdominal muscle density, the lower the risk of developing CHD, and the narrower the abdominal muscle area, the lower the risk of developing CVD. There was no correlation with stroke.

The research team said, “It was confirmed that men with higher abdominal muscle density and narrower abdominal muscle area have a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD),” adding, “The reason there was no relationship with stroke is because the effect of muscles on coronary arteries and cerebrovascular vessels is different. “I can see it,” he said.

Professor Larson said, “More than anything, it appears that having high abdominal muscle mass can independently have a positive effect on cardiovascular health.”

Meanwhile, the results of this study were recently published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
