Bug makes couple pay $30,000 instead of $54 for Uber ride

How about paying, instead of R$ 300, R$ 145 thousand for a prosaic trip? Well, it was the equivalent of what an American couple spent on an Uber ride in Costa Rica. Douglas and Dominique Ordonez were visiting the country to celebrate their five years of marriage. But happiness went down the drain when they saw, on the bank statement, that they owed US$ 22,697 (more than R$ 110,000).

This is because a bug in the application did not make the correct conversion and debited US$ 30,000 from the account, instead of US$ 55, the correct amount for the trip. The price was 600% higher than correct. And, instead of going straight to the credit card, the amount was charged by debit, also registered in the app.

Immediately, the couple sought to complain on Twitter, triggering the Uber team, but it took 24 hours for them to receive a return that the case was being investigated. In turn, the credit union Altura Credit Union could not help immediately and that it would be necessary to wait another four days for the correct conversion of the amount.

The couple even received an alert that they would be blamed for the error for not activating a travel warning on the card to avoid charges that circumvent security protocols. A week after the couple returned from the trip, the refund was made, with an apology from Altura.
