“I reacted strongly to the BSP‘s decision to participate in the government as it is indeed a betrayal of the BSP voters. It is indeed a sale of ideas, of a cause, of principles followed for years by the party. A sale of all this for five ministerial positions,” said cornelia Ninova, former leader of the Bulgarian Socialist party (BSP), in a scathing critique of the ongoing cabinet negotiations.
Ninova did not mince words, describing the emerging government as a “Frankenstein” creation. “This is a government of Boyko Borisov propped up by the BSP and ‘There Is Such a People,’ orchestrated by Delyan Peevski and dependent on the influence of Ahmed Dogan. It is indeed brutal, absurd, and a collection of everything evil from the Transition era. Behind the scenes, it’s all about power-sharing agreements and backroom deals,” she asserted.
She expressed disbelief at the current political landscape, stating, “After 35 years of transition, we are once again relying on Ahmed Dogan to hold the fate of the country in his hands. If he supports such a government—one that belongs to Peevski and Borisov—then he has lost all touch wiht reality. It’s as if he is signing his own death sentence.”
Ninova also claimed that individual ministers in the new government would be under Peevski’s influence, including those from the BSP. She emphasized his strong ties to the party, alleging that Borisov and Peevski had pressured BSP MPs to leave the hall during critical votes. “This is the model of behind-the-scenes agreements and a bought state. You can see it with your own eyes,” she said.
Reflecting on her own experiences, Ninova revealed, “Many times, pressure was exerted on the BSP to enter into such alliances. I have felt it firsthand. The system pushed me out as I refused—and still refuse—to collude with the deep state and the mafia.”
She also highlighted the irony of the situation, recalling how GERB and boyko Borisov once vehemently opposed working with the BSP. “Yesterday, GERB and Borisov were parroting the same line: ’Never with the communists.’ They accused us of sending people to Siberia, yet now they are aligning with us. The next elections will reveal the truth,” she told bTV.
Ninova’s remarks underscore the deep divisions and shifting alliances in Bulgarian politics, painting a picture of a system rife with backroom deals and power struggles. Her critique serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the country as it navigates its political future.
